View Full Version : N reg wrx import tuning
Hi all,
I don't want to do too much to my new toy,but i was just wondering what a safe boost level is to run,its got a Mines ecu,hks pipe, soon have a downpipe as well so it will be a full decat, will also have an apexi avcr if i can fit it.Also what intercooler/chargecooler should i get.Panel filter or induction kit??
Cheers
Steve
Beware of the Mines ECU these have been known to blow engines in the UK unless plenty of octane boost is used.
Their boost control is very aggresive and the timing far to advanced for UK fuel.
I expect the mines is running around 16.5psi, so there is little need to fit an Apexi AVCR.
The boost was running @ 0.8 bar,i've upped it to 1bar on the apexi avcr, but until i get it on the rollers i've put it on setting 'B' @0.8 bar again.I'm fitting a H&S downpipe soon so will get it all checked out then, was thinking of putting an EGT gauge or an LC-1 or something in,just to be safe.
Is it worth putting an air filter on or just an uprated panel in,not looking for massive power, just reliable power. Also whats a good intercooler upgrade for the early shaped one??
Cheers
Steve
The pre99 cars can take an induction kit (not recomended on later cars) but the hot air in the engine bay will sap any power gains unless you partition off the filter area.
Not sure if anyone has actually proved an induction kit gives any more power compaired to a panel filter anyway.
Depends what you want to spend on an uprated Intercooler?
Cheepest way would be to fit a later type straight IC (takes a little work but is possible) and then make or mod the scoop undertray to direct the air to suit :D
Bob'swagon has a MY99 IC for sale. He was going to fit it to his early Scoob before he traded up to a new STI :)
Need to find out if the car is Pinking/detting,whats the best way of doing this as i'm not sure the car was pinking on the rollers or not(makes a strange noise through the exhaust since fitting the straight through, but it seems low down??),it doesn't seem to be on the road, had her up to 1.3 bar earlier, but it hit the fuel/boost cut,set it a bit lower (1.1-1.2) & it seems to be ok,really need to find out if its ok on optimax or not at higher boost levels as i dont want it to blow up on me.
Any advice?
Steve
Fit a Knocklink or get someone to listen with detcans.
If the Rolling Road you used were anygood they would of been using Det Cans and advised accordingly.
Well we had ear defenders on & we did hear something @ 1 bar & still a tiny amount @ 0.9 bar...but i can't hear sh*t when im driving & like i said i had her up to 1.1/1.2 bar, thats whats confusing me..... i have heard pinking when driving in a few cars,my brothers R reg did it on very cold nights @ 1 bar in 4th.Bloky on RR said he thought it was & i thought the same, just so confused as i havent on the road???

if you can hear it wihtout cans then it is detting it's tits off.. you need a passenger to listen to the cans whilst driving, if you can't hear etc..
RR is totally differnet situation to the road.. so it might be okay on the road..
but not on the RR or visa versa..
The gain running the mines ecu over a standard one on the same boost is very little and you are less likely to blow it up on a standard ecu.
Simon
If you set it so it dets on the road, by ear. Then knock the boost back a bit so you can't hear it. Chances are it will still be detting.
Bring it to the meet, set it to whatever boost you want and I'll connect the detcans.
That'll soon find out
Like i say though haven't heard a peep on the road.
Just picked up a chipped ecu so i will put it back on the rollers so i can compare the two, side by side.
Scott still may take you up on the det cans @ the next meet
