API can probably sort you out with cheap or expensive or anywhere in between.

Or have a word with Saj in Crawley at http://www.japperformanceparts.co.uk/

Hello mate same happened to me just over a year ago strangly enough just after I got my morgage, I used vince at RDS for the removing and replacing of the engine, then sent it to API they rebuilt it and sent it back in little under a week (I think) and that was not far off the £2000 mark, best thing i ever done tho.:hmm:

Nice one cheers guys, have been speaking to Graham Goode about a new short block which he can supply for £2300 + Vat, or £2500 + vat with Cosworth pistons... sounds tempting if I had the money! Will check out the above links too - ta...

Cosworth pistons are not the best for the job..

2300+VAT for a standard bottom end is not cheap.

www.hdcsubaru.com does good pricing.

Have arranged for a new (remanufactured) block from subaru... I spoke to Api, HDC, Central, Jap Performance, Grade A Subaru, Flat 4 (was looking at a new 2.5sti Block but too complicated and expensive - £1500 with Gaskets), Graham Goode, Nippon Spares, and Api were definately the most helpfull and had a lot of options for me (and a decent price). Have used HDC for my header tank and other little bits and they were very quick and resonably priced.
I have gone with a new block from Subaru simply because I get a warranty, I have arranged to take my Jap engine as a surchage (not normal) and the price was ok considering it was from Subaru (750).
So now my garage has a fair bit to do...
Fit the new block (with new head bolts,Cambelt etc...)
Fit new spec Wrx Clutch and flywheel
Fit recondtioned gearbox (with 2 yr warranty from Cleckheaton Clutch and Gearbox)
Fit Oil catch tank
Fit new 'Ninja' Downpipe with sports cat (have already got Ninja full system with centre de-cat)
And a few little things too...
That should keep them busy (and me out of pocket for a while)...
Will let you all know how it goes etc! Any thoughts welcome!!!

Did I read that right... £750 for a short engine from Subaru ??
And they are taking a Jap WRX engine in exchange ??

Its a bit of a complicated affair! My garage (Autotechnics - Chichester) have organised it for me- I'm not sure how they managed it... I will ask what dealer and who to speak to there...
Iam getting a 96-98 remanufactured block which is (according to the very helpful chap at Subaru) going to be exactly the same (I know they are all EJ20 but with some variations). I think that no surcharge came up when ordering?!! I was looking at the P1 lump but came up with a surcharge (total came to about £1400). Will add to this thread with the Suppliers and enthusiastic helpful chap who works there...

I didn't think it would ever happen, looks like my garage does a lot of Scoobies and have developed a good relationship... just hope its all true and I manage to get what I've been offered! - the guy who works for Subaru isn't just an employee, he's a Scooby nut... thank god!:D

Bum... the Uk block wont fit my head- different pistons etc... its not gonna be 750 for the block now - it gonna be about 1100 now for the block. However this is a brand new block from subaru. They are selling it to me at cost price but still stings... Dont know when I'll get the car back now, really wanted to make the Pease meet this time, so will keep phoning the garage...
will keep posted of progress.

If an STi 2.5 block from the USA can fit into any impreza, and have any heads bolted up to it i.e UK MY98, MY99, STi and newage etc..etc....
Then I'm sure a UK block will go in a WRX.

Probably more the case that the person on the end of the phone supplying is unsure, so wants to supply a complete unit.

Give David at API a call, he will know for sure.
