View Full Version : Clutch Problem

During some motorway driving over the weekend, the clutch appeared to slip when accelerating in 5th from 3.5k revs – it jumped ~2 -300 rpm with no increase in speed. It did it again yesterday when I was gently accelerating up a hill whist the car was still relatively cold (2-300 rpm jump at 3k in 5th). All the classic symptoms of the onset of clutch slip :( but on searching SN, other possibilities such as the master or slave may have stuck, the fluid boiling in the clutch slave and taking up all the freeplay or a glaze on the plate found as other possible causes.

All the alternatives are obviously more attractive, as they are cheaper than the new clutch option! Can anyone suggest any way of testing/eliminating any of the above?

In the event of a new clutch being required, can anyone suggest a good place to have it done? Also anyone have an idea how much it might set me back? Rivett Autos come recommended I note, but they appear to be in the middle of nowhere – how does one get from and back there once a car is dropped off?

Thanks for any help!
Cheers

Does sound like a clutch. How many miles has it done?

Park on the flat with the handbrake on.
stick it in gear and try to off. If it slips it will probably be the clutch (mind you it probably is anywway).

Mike does a clutch for about £300 fitted but speak to him about payment ;)
He has loan cars if you arrange it when you book it in.
Though it should only take the morning to do a straight clutch swap. Pop to Horsham or Guildford (30 mins away) for a bit of shopping and lunch and it'll be done when you get back :D

He's away racing at the moment, but should be back Tuesday.
If the clutch has only just started slipping you'll have plenty of time before it needs sorting. (maybe 2 months if you don't rag it!!) ;)

Thanks for the info Iain and the cost estimate. Will give Mike a ring on his return and have a chat.
