This has happened three times now.

After about 5-10 mins of setting off I might come to a traffic light [usually on a slight inclie]. After sitting there for a couple of mins I have noticed puff of smoke coming out of the back. Setting off it there's a big puff of smoke then nothing. This does happen when the car is hot, the turbo isn't making any strange sounds.

Any ideas [oh I have a decat system]

A worried Roo

Maybe as simple as oil in the intercooler, if you have overfilled it with oil then it will blow out of the vent pipes straight back into the breather, it then slowly makes its way into the intake system and runs down when the engine is warm and revving up when setting off can draw it into the intake manifold, other reasons could be the turbo seals have gone or the valve oil seals maybe worn

Does it only do it on an incline? (I take it it nose up?)

Car's not overfilled with oil and I hope Dyney comes up with a cheaper solution to the last two [cos I'm skint]

I don't know the answer :(

I would have said turbo seals, but does seem odd that it only does it then.
If you leave it to idle when warm for 5-10 mins does it do it on the flat?

No, mate of mine reckons it could be the injector rails. Not sure how that could be.

How much to do seals !! Approx.

Turbo rebuild :o
Probabaly looking at £200 'ish I would have thought (bit of a guess though) ;)
Call Turbo Dynamics and ask them or change the turbo :)

Any chance it could be the injector rails. Can't think how but me mate takes his Caterham to bits and puts it back together himself so he knows alot more than me.

Roo

Gonna call Turbo Dynamics [have you got their number by any chance]

I don't see how the rails would leak and cause smoke from the exhaust???

What colour is thye smoke?
White, white with a bluey tint or black????

from experience (2 turbos!) leave it on an incline for 5/10 mins.
then rev it .
if it smokes, its your seals.

also helps if you've got it nice and hot befor you park up.

done 2 turbos myself and both have portraied the saim traits.......

sorry!

It's white smoke [at first I thought it was heavy condensation but no chance].

Will book into Gatwick to let them have a look.

Apparently its the MAF !!

No 100% certain but Mike [at Gatwick Motors] thinks this could be the solution.

Those MAF's are cr@p seems like the last one lasted 2 years

More white than anything else. They say it could be unburnt fuel.

To be fair as well I have been really lazy and not put any oil in for 6 months [though I do check now and again]. It only needed .4 litre so that aint too bad.

At a loss otherwise.

the thing to do is smell it. it will be obvious if its oil
it is normally white with a very small blue twinge.

i cant see it being the MAF personally. Although it may be duff itself.
what sort of mileage are you getting to a tank?

Now there's the problem.

Since starting work up here in the smoke I haven't filled the car up!! only top up now and again.

Speaking with Mike he was saying that the likelhood is overfueling. Not sure whether this would reduce carbon deposits around that seals and lead to oil leaking in.

Gonna see how it goes with the new MAF though
