hello im looking at upgrading the turbo my 99 uk impreza what do you all think is the best upgrade i want one with a real kick:norty:

it all depends on kick

off the mark my TD04 will knock spots off most cars

but if i was on track or a motaway say then a td 05 will be quicker but a td05 18g will be quicker 2

0r you can say buggerit and go for a TD05 20g but have loads off lag

i want a punchy quick car that has verygood top end, but it aint gonna be cheap

Depends what you ultimate goal is.

Standard TD04 pick up well but runs out of puff at 5,600rpm - Good for 280BHP, but charge temps start going mental above these levels. 1.2bar peak dropping to 0.9bar at redline.

VF24/VF28/VF29 all pretty much the same. Pick up is slightly later then a TD04 but it will hold good boost to the redline - Good for 320BHP. 1.4bar peak dropping to 1.2bar redline

VF34/VF35 pick up about the same as the above, but can handle a little more boost - Good for 340-350BHP. 1.4bar peak & held to redline

TD05FE/TD05-18G pick up slightly later then the above, good strong turbo capable of 350BHP. 1.4bar peak & held to redline


TD05-20G Pick up much the same as above - Good for 350-380BHP 1.5bar peak & held to redline


Obviously the boost levels quoted need to be backed up with suitable engine and fuelling modifications.
There are more variants out there, but the above are the popular options.
