What gains am I going to get by changing the standard WRX to the STI one? :2ponder: :2ponder: :2ponder:

Red 'STi' lettering...need I say more :D

The WRX one is quite restrictive apparently, although Dyney may beg to differ as that's what he runs.

I would say, that unless you are aiming for 330BHP+, you won't see much benefit.

I know simon (jolly green monster) has seen some restrictive results from the WRX intercooler, so he may want to add more to this post.

The more comments the better :thumb:
Would like to get 300bhp or just over this year and over 350bhp next !:norty:
Well thats the plan any way !

With the STI IC you'll get a bigger cooling surface area and should be less restrictive :)

FMIC is better still but can be expensive and quite a lot of work to fit.
I doubt you'll need a FMIC on your std turbo ;)

STI IC will be good for over 350 BHP.
I'm running a WRX IC like your std one at 350'ish

change the fuel pump when you get it mapped

ive just changed my intercooler from a classic wrx to a sti 8 one

ive changed alot of pipe work aswell to samco
still sorting out the bonnet to intercooler bit, think ive got the design sorted and got it all cut and ready to weld up just need to find a tig welder that can weld up 24g [0.6mm] stainless , when its done keith is takeing my car out for a drive to gauge another opinon,

my view driving around town and on A roads the car has become more reasponsive, and more power low down, driving in trafic etc, havent had a play much as not finished,

I take it you mean before its mapped !

I'm not sure if the WRX dropped back down to 380cc injectors. Something is telling me they did but I cannot confirm.

Running 440cc injectors at 1.35bar (a little higher then your TD04 can safley produce) and you will be pushing enough air to max out 440's at standard pump pressure.

So, you may want to consider larger injectors if you only have 380's.
OR
A walbro 255ltr pump and pressure regulator if you have 440's.

so are you saying if i change injectors to 440 I should change the turbo , and if so what turbo would you suggest !
And does this mean if i have 380 injectors I can not just change the pump to a walbro 550 pump !

You can get a bit out of the 380's with a pump & reg but not much above 300BHP.

The TD04 runs out of puff at 1.2bar and you have to drop the pressure down to about 1bar at high rpm or else it just works as a hair dryer.

Popular Turbo upgrades are :

TD Series, in order of size :
TD05-16g
TD05-18g
TD-05-20g

VF Series in order of Size :
VF24 or VF28
VF34
VF35

so pump , reg and out of the turbo's what would you suggest ?
What reg is needed or does it come with the walbro pump kit?

have a chat with us at the next meet, if you want ill give you a blast up the road in my car to see what you think,

cant push it at the moment as its in between mods and i will have new springs and wont know how the car handles, but i can give you the gist

You can change the fuel pump at anytime, but not worth it unless your remapping the ECU or running high boost. Same with the fuel pressure regulator really.
If you fit a pump you would be wise to fit a reg at the same time and just set it to std pressure.
If you change the injectors or up the fuel pressure you will need a remap.
Obviously changing the turbo would need a remap too :)
So if you go down that route do it all in one and save the cost of another remap when you fit the turbo.

FSE do a good reg that is well priced or the SX/aeromotive that I have is a little more but better made ;)

What turbo you fit depends on how you want the delivery/where you want the power band IYSWIM

The TD05 is std fit to the early classic WRX saloons and all UK's to MY96
Though it needs the compressor cover modifying to fit later cars.
The TD05 -16g is the std size compressor wheel
the 18g is bigger and the 20g is the daddy :D
I wouldn't recommend a 20g on a 2 litre road car.
The 18g is meant to be VERY good. Spools up quickly and hangs on later into the rev range.

The VF28 came as std on the P1's (I think) so are well suited to a 2 litre.
Not ure on the merits of the 34/35's
Your best off speaking to Paul at Zen performance or Mark at Lateral performance. Tell them what you want to do with the car and how you normally drive and they will recommend the right turbo for you :)
