Crunching Gears

Guys n Gals

Not sure what to replace first....

Changing up through the gears either at speed or in traffic and all is fine but... changing down (mainly third) it crunches but goes in.
If I do a bit of heal toe and blip the juice when changing down it doesn't crunch...

So do I start with a new clutch or gearbox or something else? :confused:

I would drop the oil out of the gearbox and replace with 4 litres of Castrol syntrax in. It may be the best £40 you ever spend....

First thing to do is change to some decent gearbox oil.

My MY94 has crunchy synchro's within a few miles of using Syntrax it was sorted.
Don't expect an instant result as the oil has to penatrate through, but a couple of days driving should get it through the system.

Wheres the best place to buy the oil ? and what grade is it 75ws90???

just a quick question . The castrol gear oil is it good for the diff as well?

Yes :)
Though if it was a Type or RA with DCCD I would check the oil spec for the rear diff.

5 speed gearbox oil capacity is 3.5 Litres + 0.8 for the rear diff
STI 6 speed is 4.1 + 0.9-1.1


I don't have the bigger STI diff so I will only need 0.8 for the diff.
I make that 5 litres each.

Yes its castrol found them on ebay, asked for a discount , emailed me direct phone number and that's the story !

Alan isn't racing himself anymore but he sill has the formula ford team, only did a couple of meets last season but we will be doing a few more this year. I'll mention you tomorrow to them. Sadly i can't make tomorrow as the inlaws are coming over for lunch unfortunatley! I will come to the next east sussex meet as its about time i showed my face.
