i was wondering if any of you could shed some light on the knocking noise.

the sti ra had new coils fitted this morning. myself and dad took it out and it ran really well (fixed the high speed miss fire) but on the way home we noticed a knocking noise. my brother looked at it and said sounds like bottom end/pistons noise

i did a search on another forum and the maf sensor reared it's head i only say this cos the air box had to be taken out to fit the coils and i wondered if the sensor could of been damaged at all. i could be barking up the wrong tree completley and clutching straws! lol

any one got a ball park figure on how much a bottom end rebuild would cost?

the car is a sti ra 1996, and it is bog standard

many thanks

wat is the sound like on idle ?
if you blip the throttle a bit from idle, does it sound deep metalic ralling ?
is it from the centre of the engine?

MAF sensor can fail on the later cars 99/00 but the earlier ones are stronger. not to say that they cant fail !

how hard were you driving it ? lots of high revs , high load ? could have done it in :(

it could be piston noise, but best not run it until you get it checked out properly.

thanks for the reply steve

been confirmed bottom end gone! but would you believe it we have managed to find someone local to do it and he has the bits in stock too!

just before it went we were driving it normal, sticking to speed limits and not stressing the engine, i just think it is bad luck

ah, well i hope you get it fixed soon and it doesnt cost TOO much.

it could have been where it was working again and not cutting out etc so it put extra load on an already failing bearing....

but as you say .. just one of those thing :(

Dad has found someone to do it for just under £4k, it is what we expected really
