Hello people , just fitted a recon engine to my 95 wrx,
Its running and driving sweet as , apart from the CEL is on constantly ,
Did then test with black wires to read the code and it just pulsed evenly indicating that no codes have been stored ?
I reset it and went out for a drive, as soon as i started car , it came straight back on , drove for a few miles the checked again and no codes ??
Im baffeled what could be causing this ???
Please help :2ponder:
Lee
Bit hard to say what it is really.
I would suggest getting it plugged into a select monitor at a Subaru specialist and see what it comes up with when the CEL is on.

Rivett Autos is nr Dorking , so quite a way for you ?
if its on CEL constantly, then there should be a code, really dont understand why there isnt - unless its something major - have you got a chip in the ecu ? might be that (try removing and rejoining the link that has to be cut?)
when on CEL it goes to 'limp home' mode which should mean its safe as long as you dont use boost (it will limit it anyway) or too many revs (3-4k max)
I take it the car runs fine apart from that ?
what from the donor engine (sensors) did you use & what was the year of it ? it maybe that one of the sensors is wrong, or 'out' - i.e. throttle posistion might be set wrongly etc.....
Steve
Rivett's is the closest place to you that I "KNOW" have a Select monitor, though they don't do weekends :(
I don't understand why it isn't storing a code either :2ponder:

The engine i bought was a complete recon, all i had to do was put my loom on it , so all the sensors were already on the engine.
Ive checked all electrical plugs pipes the lot and all are connected correctly,
The ecu is a z4 one previous owner had it installed and has no chip that im aware of ,but was mapped at power engineering , would this upset the recon engine in any way ??
Everytime i start it the cel comes straight on , but it drives perfect ??
do a cel check everytime and it just flashes in an even constant mode as is to say no codes stored ??
The only thing ive done is remove the greddy boost controller and gone back to standered solinoid , this is all plumbed correctly as copied whwere pipes go from a mates wrx, and works fine.
Its a 95 engine.
Im totally lost with it

if its been mapped then yes it'll have a chip/daughterboard in there of sorts as you cant change the maps any other way in these ecus.
i would guess that if all the sensors were on this new engine, then it must lie with one of those.
the boost solenoid wouldnt cause an error that early unless it was electrical.
I'm afraid the only way you're going to start is to get a select monitor (or variant of - i.e. someone with a laptop ) to monitor the voltages of the sensors to see if you can pinpoint what is giving the error (although if its that obvious it should throw an error code :( )

Been of the road since the begining of october
Hope rivett can sort it all my faith is in them now :thumb:
Cheers Lee
Well the Select monitor showed the "Knock sensor" was playing up though not showing a code. Reset the codes anyway and as soon as it's restarted ...."Knock sensor" fault comes back.
Fingers crossed it's that.
And then the trip up will have been worth it :D
Let us know how you get on and I'll pass it on to Mike he'll want to know if that fixed it :)

Cel is out now and runs sweet as
Other lil prob u can help me with tho ...........
When i accelerate , boost kicks in up to just under 1 bar (0.9 ish)
but it feels like im not getting any where ??
in 5th doing 80 -90mph and its as if im screaming the tits off it ??? it boosts up well quick and before u know it ur in 5 gear doing around 80 , take it up to 90 ish and im scared its gonna blow again ??
Clutch is ok as checked this before re-fitted engine ,
Any ideas ???
split boost pipe? possibly, im a electrician not mechanic.

i looked and couldnt see any thing split , any more ideas ?
Are you saying it's reving very high for the speed your doing when cruising or that the revs rise fast and you don't seem to accelerate?
ScoobySport

it's reving very high for the speed that im doing,
When i hold the gear say 4th to overtake someone it boosts up quick and then sort of cuts out and i let off then resumes as usuall , sometimes it stutters aswell only wen planting it tho , hard to explain to be honest :2ponder:
Hope you get what i mean , it just doesnt feel right.

Im not really clued up on coil packs , but it seems to run fine a drive fine im sure its boosting up too fast but the car just dont seem to be going any where , as if clutch is slipping , but the clutch is fine as was checked before engine went in ??? im totally lost ????
Just because it looked OK before you put it in doesn't mean it hasn't got oil on the face or something.
You would hear the clutch spin up if it was slipping though :)
The coil packs are bolted to the top of the plugs.
They are prone to cracking under the rubber boot where it connects to the spark plug. The cracks cause the charge to track away from the plug rather than fire the plug.
This nomally happens at high boost or high loads on the engine (ragging it!!) :p
It missfires and then recovers before doing it again.
The high reving could be that you aren't used to the lower gearing :2ponder:

mmm i'll check the coil packs tomorrow or swap them over with my mates , and see how it goes , if i cant work it out might nip up to rivetts when i get a chance see if you or mike can figure it out , might just be me but i want to 100% its ok ,, if you get what i mean.
I'll be at Mike's tomorrow :)
If you get one off....pull the boot off the bottom (carefully) and if they are cracked put some insulating tape round them and replace the boot.
Seemed to work for Rob :)

Finally checked the coil packs over the weekend , and 2 where in 3 pieces under the rubber boot !!!
Got 2 new ones and fitted them just now , all new plugs fitted aswell , took car for a spin and its still missing from 5000 revs upwards in every gear, below that its fine.
Im really confused now:confused:
Some one help me:thumb:
