View Full Version : What supporting mods?
Right. Time for some mods...
I've got a MY00 UK turbo 2000 & i've been looking at getting a new turbo, ECU & boost controller, I've got my eye on an Andy Forrest TD05/06 20G :norty:
with an Apexi Power FC & FC Commander with the boost controller kit, I looked at getting a fmic but i wondered if i need it? Or if i could just have a larger capacity top mount?
Also it would be useful to know what power gains i could expect from that lot?
Apart from a straight through center pipe & ninja rear box with a Blitz induction kit, the car is standard.
What else might i need to get the best from those bits listed?
Oh yeah, i get a free Walbro 255lph fuel pump with the order so that'll go in too :thumb:
Opps... posted in the wrong section :cuckoo:

Ask Dyney's ok ...he's the one that will probably reply anyway ;)
1st off, dont bother changing the ECU, just ECUTek it. Yes a bit more expensive but you keep it basically standard. No nice hand controller, but you wont need that anyway :p
That 05/06 20G will be way too laggy on a 2.0ltr, i would go an TD05/18G
FMIC/ TMIC ... the age old question. FMIC will always give you better cooling but at the expense of lag. a good STi7/8 TMIC will do you good to ~400bhp (although you'd probably get more power/torque if it had a FMIC at that point)
With either of those turbos you'll need larger injectors. 550cc ones.
Has it got a decat DownPipe? if you dont want to go fully decat, then i'd suggest gettnig a sports cat DP instead of the OEM one.
Apart from that, you might need a fuel pressure regulator (and gauge) , dont get an FSE one.
and, to top it all off ... a new mortgage :haha:
power wise, an 18G should see you around 370Bhp which will be enough to break the gearbox.
Steve
Agree :D
For a road car a 20g is over kill on a 2 litre. An 18g will spool up nicely and still give you the power you want.
ECUTek (same as Del's looking at) will give you all the saftey features and nice idle of the std ECU ('cos it is the std ECU) :) But can be re-mapped just like any other mappable ECU. All at about the same price as an Apexi, might even work out less ;)
Again for a road car below 400BHP I'd stick to a TMIC like the STI 7/8/9 one.
Pretty easy to fit to a MY99/00, just need the brackets and a DV to fit it, then make the bonnet under tray to fit to get the max from the IC.
Not sure at what power the 440 inj's reach their limit, but if you fit a fuel pressure reg you could up the pressure to give them a little more flow and save buying injectors at the same time as everything else!
Though if you wanted to change them later you would need the map tweeking (cost is much lower for a tweek after the initial re-map).
If you have't changed the downpipe I would consider it before the re-map, wether you go full de-cat or for a Sports cat is down to you. The sports cat is meant to loose you 5BHP over a full de-cat, but you have piece of mind come MOT time :)
Thanks for the advice guys, I was thinking Ecutek, but liked the idea of the hand controller (love my gadgets)
I take it that i'll need a seperate boost controller if i go with the Ecutek?
Any advice on where to get (& price of) said ecutek & a TD05 18G?
Probably get the intercooller from Jap Performace in Crawley, have been toying with the idea of second hand turbo from there but not sure it would be a good idea though, :nono:
At least if the turbo is a bit cheaper i can afford a ninja sport cat from scoobysport :thumb:
Its good my bank manager likes me isn't it

this is what im doing hope it helps
i also have done sti 8 intercooler and should have the paterns etc for the brakets
also done the undertray to the intercooler
if you go down this route and need some bits making i can do it aswell but not for free but i could work out a good price, and considering i make it all out of stainless steel that i have to buy in and rubber gaskit that aint cheep i dont make a lot of money for a days work, but i would need you to come to my work on a sunday as it is a case of made to measure partly, i quoted scott £120 and it works out at £50 materials thats if i dont screw up, but that would be my fault and my cost !
Will this is open on the subject of 18g s . I now got my 18g built and was going to put it in on saturday !
Am I right in thinking that I can drive round with out a remap on low revs !
Will be remapped before the months out hopefully !
C.J,
Yes you can drive at low revs :)
I expect low boost would be OK (0.5 bar 'ish), but it's too tempting to "just see"!!!!
Not sure what the ECUTek boost control is like compaired to a boost controller, but an electronic boost controller would give you much more control aswell as gear dependant boost :D So you could limit boost in first to 0.5 bar etc.
ECUTek mappers:
Pat Herbourne- (I have his number and e mail) ;)
Andy Forrest - www.andyforrestperformance.co.uk = £650 / subequent re-map £200
Paul - www.zenperformance.co.uk = £646.25 inc VAT / £117.50 inc
Bob Rawle - www.brdevelopments.com
Jolly green monster - Simon (Not sure he is doing classics yet though)www.jollygreenmonster.co.uk
TD05 -18g:
Mark - www.lateral-performance.com
Andy Forrest - As above
Paul - As above
I think Simon can source them as well, though I expect it will be from one of those above.
Looks like Andy's 18g's are £850 new or £550 exchange (includes 12 months warranty). Zen is £998.75 inc (I assume that's new)
So I expect the rest will be very simalar :)
I know Pat Herbourne did Bob a very good price on his re-map through me ;)

Here's what I've done to my MY99 RB5. (Yours is a MY00, so I believe the engine/internals are the same)
VF35 Turbo. (ported wastegate)
Full decat,
Harvey Smith ported headers and custom uppipe.
Sti 8 TM Intercooler (inc. undertray)
Walbro fuel pump.
3 port boost solenoid.
Mapped by Bob Rawle (EcuTek)
Everything else is standard.
It's producing about 330bhp
I f I wanted anymore power, I'd have to upgrade the Standard Injectors and turbo.
But any more power and the UK gearbox might not hold out for too long.
Good luck with the mods...
