Can anyone tell me the what the IHI VF series turbo's equivelant of a TD05 is?
And what, if any, are the differences?

Thinking i might get one of them instead, must be a reason they are cheaper :2ponder:

they are a different make up internally and are often considered as more prone to destroying themselves.

this is until the later series, like the VF34, 35, 36, 37

some VF range are roller bearing turbos, so should spool quicker than the TD range which are sleeve bearings.

the trouble with a lot of them appear to be missmatch of the hot to cold sides. some are way too big resulting in laggyness. somre are too small and when pushed, break.

they're cores also cant be rebuilt, they have to be thrown away. where as the TD range can be.

VF 34 or 35 are about equivilent to a TD05 i'd say.

Looks like the saving might be a false economy :nono:
Might go for a TD04 Hybrid, that way i can exchange my old turbo to bring the price down a bit :thumb:
Next up will be ECUTek Re-map :norty:
Looks like my massive mod spend up is gonna slow to a trickle

TD04 hybrid from AFP are good for about 300-320 Bhp
however, a TD05 would probably give you a similar gain and probably cheaper (possibly a bit more midrange too)

I was going for the TD05 18G but because i've got a MY00 UK its got a TD04 i can exchange so the hybrid will only be £400
Just want to breech 300bhp at first, while i'm getting bored of that i can save up for a bigger turbo :norty:

If you buy an old td05 secondhand for about £120 he'll up it to 18 g for £500 and you will save the differents on only having the one mapp !
This is the way i've don it but been a bit more brave and changed it to a 18g myself ! :cuckoo:
will see tomorrow if it works !
Cost £245.00

Now that sounds like a plan
Where did you get your old TD05 from? I wouldn't know where to look, aside from going round a load of scrap yards
Plus i wouldn't have to take the car apart & wait till the new turbo turns up

TD05's were fitted to all the UK and the WRX saloons before MY97 (they changed to the oval grill instead of the slatted grill at the same time) :)

Look on ebay or on the forums doesn't make any odds if its a 90 degree if yours is a front entry , as your going to have it exchanged to a 18 g

no time at-all. should be good to go from the get-go... as long as its got oil through it..it should be fine!

Turbos generally don't need running in :)
And even engines only need a few hundred miles to bed in now days.
