View Full Version : ppp or no ppp that is the question.....
hi,
am on the brink of shelling out for ppp on my 06 wrx wagon..... but i cant help thinking im wasting cash.
while i appreciate that i will keep the 3yr subaru warranty i cant bring myself to pay around £1700 for a decat downpipe, a blue hose and a new ecu(that isnt even individually mapped for my car.) i aready have a prodrive backbox and green panel filter. if i purchase a decat downpipe and the silicon hose am i better off getting a remap to suit my car and would it be cheaper than £1700? also do you know where i could go to in sussex as all the tuning/mapping places seem to be midlands based?
i also hear that i could achieve much more torque than the 310lb/ft the ppp offers.
any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
cheers and safe driving.
The PPP comes with a Sports cat downpipe not a decat, but you can get sports cat DP's from £300 or a full decat DP for about £200
A Samco turbo kit (3 hoses)(TCS168) is £58.18 from www.rallydesign.co.uk
And an ECUtek remap to suit your car is around £600-700'ish
But if the dealer doesn't approve or finds out you could forfeit your warrenty :(
yep find a dealer that will approve it, manufactures can tell and do sometimes check,
there is one subaru dealer in sussex that wont touch my car still as its a import, does it bother me, no i just go somewere else
many thanks guys,
any idea where to get a remap around the sussex area? ideally want someone who knows scoobs - are there any around(im in worthing) or are they all midlands area?
cheers.
not sure if any good for you but...

there are mappers that travel. probably the most traveled man is Pat Herborn
He's often down south and around the surrey ish area (where there is a nice rolling road if you want it mapped on that instread of doing it on the road).
Steve
Bob Rawle is the man to get in touch with. I have an 04 STi with PPP, I had it on the rolling road last year before going to Bob and it went 299bhp and 297nm. That's with the bit's Dyney mentioned plus a vortex afterburner back box.
I have yet to put it on a rolling road since the re-map but Bob reckons that it will be between 320 & 330 bhp and about the same torque. I did this while talking to Dave at Gatwick Subaru & Bob at the same time who kept the re-map slightly on the safe side, but without affecting my warrantee. Bob also does trips up this way. But you may have to wait a while for that as he is very popular. If you can't wait for him to come to you, it's a trip to Swindon. But that's not a bad thing as you get to get a feel for it on the way back and enjoy that extra bundle of torque.
In answer to your main question, I think that you are always safer doing things properly with new cars and warrantees asking to be void. You will notice the difference with PPP. And then again if you decide to re-map it at a later date. My car has an extended warrantee (5 years in total) after that I will probably go back to Bob Rawle and get some more "Steroids" whacked in the old girl.
Steve
s60r,
I can get Pat to come to you, if you prefer, but that would mean mapping on the road. I would use Surrey rolling road to map the car. I think Charlie charges about £75 per hour (2 should be enough). That means no mucking about in traffic and you licence isn't at risk :)
I would also change the fuel pump whichever route you take.
Fuel pump is about £90 plus fitting (pretty easy DIY job, or have a look in the suppliers forum to find a local specialist) ;)
It's a choice only you can make.
many thanks dyney will get back to you when i have decided what to do.
will either decat and get your friend to help or see if i can sort a good price for a ppp. will get the fuel pump done first either way.....walbro ok?
cheers again.
Yep Walbro 255 pump :thumb:
If you can get a PPP for under £1000 like the SIDC are hinting then I'd go that route :)

I've got an 04 wagon that without PPP is putting out 269bhp/250lbft. With a re-map I'm sure I'd get the lbft well up, but the BHP not by much. Car was RR'd in December 06.
The PPP lbft figure on the 06's is impressive (310 iirc) but how much would you be paying for it? If you want to keep the warranty... you've got no choice.
I've carried out the following mods to get the figures above...
Ninja Back Box = £200
Ninja resonated centre = £75 (2nd hand)
Prodrive de-cat centre = £70
STi panel filter = £40
Buzz Blaber TMIC splitter = £free (thanks Buzz)
..and my friendly dealer has been very accommodating.
Now here's the future for me...
1) Better fuel pump = £90 + fitting
2) Hose kit = £60 + fitting
3) BR re-map = £700
...I'm not going to bother with the downpipe.
If you add it all up it comes to roughly £1300, and I bet with a BR re-map I'll get very close to the PPP figures.
Warranty for me in 8 days is not an issue anymore, but getting the cash for the re-map is!

thanks squadron leader,
great figures without a map. out of interest why are you not doing the down pipe? ive been told that is the most beneficial change regarding the exhaust system is this correct? 30bhp and similar lb/ft for full decat or just under for high flow sports cat (ppp or similar).
im having a chat with bob (bobswagon) later as he has also been through this and has some ideas for me. but it looks like i will have to go the ppp route as im only 3months into my warranty!......besides, the 310 lb/ft is a great result, even my s60r only had 295 and was a much heavier car.
dont get me wrong, im not a complete boy racer(honest), i just want the car to be honest to itself and be everything it should rather than the detuned, strangled thing it is. why on earth is the ppp not standard equipment?
all this said....... still enjoying this great car as it is!
many thanks again and safe driving.

To be honest, now that good figures are obtainable with 'Sports CAT' down pipes I'll probably re-think that statement.
All I really want is to get the lbft figure up a bit more. If I wanted to get to the 300/300 mark sensibly, then I'm going to need to think about bigger front brakes, new turbo, bigger IC etc etc... which I have no budget for at all.
Come to think of it... I've never had a budget for modding my wagon, but have done it some how :D
J.
squadron leader,
my neighbour went to powerstation for his map and with the exhaust paid 1300 and has 351 lb/ft.
if you map yours im sure you will get the torque youre after and lets be honest bhp isnt really all that important in a car where the turbo runs out of puff around 6000rpm anyway. much rather have some torque and grunt anyday.
cheers.
The reason the PPP isn't fitted as std is down to Government/EU legislation
The car must be registered and delivered (I believe) so the PPP is then classed as an after market modification, and hence doesn't have to meet the guidelines (be it emisions/safety/whatever) for "new" cars :D
They also prefer you to run the car in before installing the PPP.
