i have a 93 wrx and all has been well until this afternoon. when stopping earlier the revs died and the car stalled, started straight away but when i let off the accellerator the revs drop to about 400 before going back and staying at approx 900. there is no hesitation an revs. i have opened the bonnet and can hear a whistling near the back of the engine bay, don't know if its related. any help would be good.

sounds like a pipe has come off. if thats the case it will run very badly on idle because it will have a vaccum leak.

suggest you get a torch and your head under the bonnet and look for anything unplugged ;)

other than that, it could be the idle control valve (brown lump on the inlet manifold). but i think from your whistling noises its a pipe!

im kinda having the same problem. when i start it in (cold) it starts fine and idle at bout 1k. then when i start it again (warm) it starts, idles at bout 1k then drops to about 200, then back to 500. sounds horrible like its trying to stall. A few ppl suggested cleaning the maf with electronic spray but didnt help:2ponder:

most early cars (pre 98) dont suffer MAFs as they are bullet proof (almost)

bad idling is normally a dirty ISCV (the brown idle control valve on the inlet ) and you need to mark where it is positionally, and remove it, clean it with brake cleaner type spray (be gentle!) and then apply a bit of light machine oil and put it back as it was...

if there is still a whistling, i'd try to work out that first!

I've only ever known one pre99 MAF fail :D

First thing to check is all the pipes incuding all the little vaccum pipes. Make sure they are all connected and there are no splits in them. Can be time consuming but is the cheapest thing to check :)

If you got an aftermarket vent to atmosphere BOV then check that.
Had the same problem with mine and turned out to be that leaking.
