Hi mates got a RA and has noise when the engines cold but dissapears when warm, sounds like classic piston slap to me but can anyone tell me how serious this is, and the way to deal with it..:cuckoo:

depends what year it is ? most that suffered were only 97/98's coz of a piston design change. if its earlier, then it still could be that, or as in most 99/00's it could also be the cam belt tentioner. they can do this for the 1st few mins until things get a bit warmer.


serious - well, it can be. basically its ovaling of the bore. if it just stays on first thing cold starts, then it should be ok (dont trash it when cold )

repair - simplest could be a change of piston, but more than likely is a re-bore and new pistons.

hi Julie,

is this the RA thats just been brought? only hasnt it just had an engine rebuild! maybe worth seeing if its got any guarantee on the parts or workmanship.

Hopefully nothing to serious

My UK 97 did it when I bought it (or soon after) at 63k miles. Was still going when I swapped engines at 110k :D

Taking it to Gatwick in the week to get it checked.
